Roland Barthes notably explored the notion of mythologies using a framework of semiotics to unpick and expose the ‘language of so called mass culture’. As a trained illustrator and graphic designer, I am familiar with the frameworks and mechanisms that allow images to convey narrative and message, but as an artist am concerned with hijacking and rewiring that system to express my own ideas around the individual, society and the search for our own purpose, meaning and ‘voice’. Through painting, printmaking and photography I tether abstract concepts- such as those found in situationism, consumerism and modernism- to everyday moments, anecdotes and challenges that we as individuals experience.
